Marathon Florida Mahi Mahi

This was a typical full-day 8-hour fishing charter in Marathon, Florida.

We left the dock around 7 am as the clients settled in the salon enjoying the air-conditioning and the luxury comforts of fishing on a gorgeous custom sportfish vs what is normally chartered in the area.

Marathon Hump FloridaMost of the local charters are center consoles whereby you are crammed wherever they seat you and are sure to get wet, bounced around, exposed to the sun all day, possibly get seasick, and use a 5-gallon bucket for a toilet! At the end of the day if you spend a few more bucks you will have an entirely different experience on the RHINO, one you won’t soon forget!

After clearing the channel, we set our course for the Marathon Humps a fantastic spot for Blackfin Tuna, Mahi, and deep dropping off the hump. An hour later we pulled up and set our spread within 15 minutes we had fish on!

We continued to troll the area and by 11 am we had our limit of 10 Blackfin and focused on catching Mahi-mahi. We quickly found a promising weed line and soon thereafter we got into the Mahi. There is nothing more thrilling than watching Mahi get a head of steam, start crashing the baits, and putting on an acrobatic show that they are famous for!

Before long we had several Mahi in the boat as we set our course back to the marina. The clients loved sitting on the mezzanine (couch) in the cockpit while watching and waiting for the action to begin. Once it’s game on, they step up quickly to reel in the fish!

Since we had time we decided to do a quick stop on the reef just a few miles from the marina for some bottom fish. As we set the chum over the side and set up our light tackle spinning gear we immediately had an “ aquarium” full of fish behind the boat. We managed to get several nice Yellowtails and Mangrove Snappers before calling it a day.
